Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 3/4 cup Dutch-Processed Cocoa Powder
  • 2 cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter (softened)
  • 3 large Eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 cups Buttermilk
  • 1–2 tablespoons Black Food Coloring Gel
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon Orange Extract
  • Orange Food Coloring Gel (yellow and red mix)
  • Powdered Sugar (for frosting)
  • Baking Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, lining bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar on medium-high speed for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in vanilla extract.
  5. Reduce mixer speed to low. Add dry ingredients in three parts, alternating with buttermilk in two parts, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.
  6. Add black gel food coloring and mix on low until the batter is a uniform deep black.
  7. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  9. While cakes cool, make the orange buttercream: Beat softened butter until creamy, gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in heavy cream, orange extract, and orange gel coloring. Beat on high for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  10. Assemble the cake: Place one layer on a plate, spread with buttercream, top with second layer, and frost top and sides with remaining buttercream.

Notes

Use Dutch-processed cocoa powder for the deepest black color. Gel food coloring is essential to avoid altering the batter’s texture. Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for a smooth batter. Do not overmix the batter after adding flour to prevent a dense cake. Cool cakes completely before frosting to prevent melting.
