A spooky and delicious black cat-shaped cookie cake made with black cocoa and gel food coloring, perfect for Halloween parties. No chill time required, and it’s a crowd-pleaser with a soft, chewy center and slightly crisp edges.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup black cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 teaspoons black gel food coloring
  • 1/2 cup candy corn (for ears)
  • Yellow and black M&Ms or candy eyes (for eyes)
  • Black licorice strings or black gel icing (for whiskers)
  • Optional: white chocolate chips or white candy melts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, beating on medium speed until fully combined, about 30 seconds.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Add 1 teaspoon of black gel food coloring and mix on low until evenly distributed. Add more coloring if needed to achieve a deep black color.
  7. Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet. Shape it into a rough cat head shape (large circle with two pointed ears on top), about 1/2-inch thick.
  8. Press 3-4 candy corn pieces into each ear area, pointed side up, for textured ears (optional).
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until edges are set and center is slightly soft. A toothpick inserted should come out with moist crumbs.
  10. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely (about 30 minutes).
  11. Once cool, decorate with black gel icing for eyes, nose, mouth, and whiskers. Add yellow M&Ms or candy eyes for eyeballs and draw pupils with icing.
  12. Slice into wedges and serve, or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Notes

For a deeper black color, use black cocoa powder and gel food coloring. Avoid overmixing to keep the cookie cake tender. Underbake slightly to prevent dryness. The cookie cake can be frozen undecorated for up to 3 months.
