These buttery, nutty shortbread cookies are shaped into knobby fingers with almond fingernails, creating a genuinely unsettling Halloween treat that’s surprisingly easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups (312g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3036 whole almonds (with skin on)
  • Red jam or food coloring (optional, for blood effect)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes with a hand mixer on medium speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl halfway through.
  3. Beat in the egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract until fully combined. The mixture might look slightly curdled—that’s normal.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk the flour and salt together. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Stop as soon as no white flour streaks remain.
  5. Scoop out about 1 tablespoon (20g) of dough for each finger. Roll into a log shape about 3 inches long and ¾ inch thick, slightly thicker at the top and tapering toward the fingertip. Place on prepared baking sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.
  6. Gently press down on each log to flatten slightly. Use the back of a knife or your finger to create 2-3 deep indentations at the knuckle joints. Press the tip of each finger to flatten it slightly, creating a nail bed.
  7. Press one whole almond firmly into the flattened tip of each finger, pointed end outward, until flush with the dough surface.
  8. Use a sharp knife to make small slashes around the knuckle indentations and press tiny indentations near the base of the fingernail to simulate cuticles.
  9. Bake at 325°F (163°C) for 14-16 minutes, until edges are just barely golden. Rotate baking sheets halfway through.
  10. Let cookies cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack. Cool completely (about 20 minutes).
  11. Optional: For blood effect, thin 1 tablespoon strawberry jam with a few drops of water, microwave 10 seconds, and dab a tiny amount at the base of each almond fingernail. Let set 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep hands cool when shaping dough to prevent butter from softening. Don’t overbake—cookies should remain pale for realistic look. Vary finger sizes and shapes for more convincing appearance.
