A fun and spooky Halloween appetizer featuring classic creamy deviled eggs decorated with olive slices to resemble spider legs. This savory treat is kid-friendly, easy to make, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 large can or jar of pitted black olives
  • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar or lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Place eggs in a single layer in a saucepan and cover with cold water by an inch. Bring to a rolling boil, then remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 12 minutes.
  2. Prepare a bowl of ice water. Transfer the eggs to the ice bath immediately after the 12 minutes are up and let cool completely for about 10 minutes.
  3. Gently tap and peel the eggs under running water. Slice each egg in half lengthwise and scoop the yolks into a medium bowl, keeping the white halves intact.
  4. Mash the yolks with a fork until fine and crumbly.
  5. Add mayonnaise, mustard, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and vinegar to the yolks. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  6. Slice the black olives in half lengthwise, then cut each half into thin, uniform strips (about 1/8 inch thick). Aim for 8 strips per egg.
  7. Spoon or pipe the yolk mixture back into the egg white halves, creating a swirl if using a piping bag.
  8. Place two olive strips on each egg half in an ‘X’ shape near the top to form legs. Add two small dots of mustard or tiny olive pieces at the top center for eyes.
  9. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to let flavors meld.

Notes

Do not rush the cooling process to prevent a green ring around the yolk. Slice olives just before assembling to prevent oxidation. For a spicy variation, add cayenne pepper. For a healthier option, substitute half the mayo with mashed avocado. Do not freeze deviled eggs as the texture will become rubbery.
