Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (5 oz/140 g) tuna in water, drained
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (or Greek yogurt for a lighter twist)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon red onion, minced (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices of whole wheat sandwich bread
  • Black olives, sliced (for shark eyes)
  • Cheese slices (optional, for shark teeth)
  • Baby carrots (cut into sticks to look like coral)
  • Celery sticks (resembling seaweed)
  • Cucumber slices (like smooth ocean rocks)
  • Cherry tomatoes (for colorful sea bubbles)
  • Snap peas (like little fish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the tuna filling (10 minutes): In a mixing bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise (or Greek yogurt), Dijon mustard, finely chopped celery, and red onion if using. Mix well until evenly blended. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Shape the sandwiches (5 minutes): Using a sharp knife or shark-shaped sandwich cutter, cut each bread slice into a shark shape. Spread a generous layer of the tuna filling on two shark-shaped bread pieces, then top with the other two shark shapes to make sandwiches.
  3. Add shark details (5 minutes): Slice black olives for the eyes and place on the shark sandwiches. Optionally, use small cheese triangles or thinly sliced almonds to create ‘teeth’ along the front edge of the shark mouth.
  4. Prepare the veggie ocean sides (5-7 minutes): Arrange baby carrot sticks, celery, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, and snap peas around the shark sandwiches on a large plate or tray to mimic an ocean floor.
  5. Final touches (2 minutes): Optionally sprinkle freshly ground pepper or drizzle olive oil on the veggies for extra flavor. Serve immediately for best crunch and freshness.

Notes

Lightly toast bread before cutting for sturdier sandwiches. Keep tuna filling chilled while prepping. Assemble sandwiches just before serving to avoid soggy bread. Substitute mayo with avocado or Greek yogurt for dairy-free or lighter options. Use gluten-free bread or lettuce wraps for gluten-free version. Fresh veggies add crunch and color; soak older veggies in ice water to refresh.
