Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for GF option)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup (150g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup (175g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (60g) chopped nuts, optional (walnuts or pecans)
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened (for baking)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature, for baking)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for baking)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon baking soda, and ½ teaspoon salt until evenly combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar and ¾ cup (150g) packed light brown sugar. Stir gently to blend.
  3. Layer the ingredients in a 1 quart mason jar starting with the flour mixture, tapping gently to settle.
  4. Add the sugar mixture on top of the flour layer, tapping lightly to keep layers distinct.
  5. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the sugar layer.
  6. Add the optional chopped nuts as the topmost layer.
  7. Seal the jar tightly with the lid.
  8. Attach a baking instruction card: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, beat 1 cup (225g) softened unsalted butter, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until creamy. Add the contents of the jar and stir until combined. Drop spoonfuls onto baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden.
  9. Decorate the jar with twine, ribbon, or festive string and optionally add a sprig of rosemary or cinnamon stick.

Notes

Measure ingredients precisely for best results. Layer ingredients carefully to keep layers distinct. Use softened butter for baking to ensure chewy, fluffy cookies. Avoid overmixing dough when baking. Baking time may vary by oven; check cookies around 10 minutes for golden edges. Store sealed jar in a cool, dry place up to 3 months. Baked cookies keep up to 5 days at room temperature or freeze up to 3 months.
