A warm, spiced, and sophisticated spiked apple cider punch that balances tartness with cinnamon, star anise, and bourbon. Ready in under 15 minutes, this easy-to-make cocktail is perfect for Halloween gatherings and autumn parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 gallon 100% pure apple cider
  • 2–4 cups Bourbon or Dark Rum
  • 3–4 large Cinnamon Sticks
  • 2–3 whole Star Anise
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated Nutmeg
  • 2–3 Oranges, sliced into rounds
  • 4–5 whole Cloves
  • 2–4 tablespoons Brown Sugar (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Place a large heavy-bottomed pot on the stove over medium-low heat and add the apple cider.
  2. Once the cider is warm to the touch, add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and freshly grated nutmeg. Stir gently and let sit for 5 minutes to release essential oils.
  3. Slowly bring the cider to a gentle simmer (small bubbles around edges) for 10-15 minutes, or up to 20 minutes for deeper flavor. Do not boil vigorously.
  4. Reduce heat to low and add the bourbon or dark rum. Stir gently to combine.
  5. If using, add brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness as needed.
  6. Add orange slices to the pot and let steep for the last 5 minutes of heating.
  7. Ladle the hot punch into mugs or heat-safe glasses. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or orange slice and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not boil the alcohol, as it can ruin the flavor and cause evaporation. Add alcohol off the heat or on the lowest setting. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon/rum. Leftover spiced cider base (without alcohol) can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Use fresh nutmeg for best flavor.
