Cozy Spiced Apple Cider Sangria - featured image

A warm, spiced red wine and apple cider sangria infused with cinnamon, cloves, and fresh fruit. Perfect for fall gatherings and easy to prepare with simple pantry staples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry or semi-sweet red wine (Pinot Noir or Merlot)
  • 1 bottle (750ml) hard apple cider (dry or medium dry)
  • 2 fresh apples (mix of tart like Granny Smith and sweet like Honeycrisp), cored and sliced
  • 1–2 oranges, sliced into rounds
  • 3–4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 5–6 whole cloves
  • 1 small piece fresh ginger, sliced thin
  • Brown sugar or honey (optional, to taste)
  • Sparkling water or soda (optional, for fizz)

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice the apples and oranges into thin wedges and rounds. Remove apple seeds.
  2. In a large glass pitcher, pour in the red wine and hard apple cider. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and fresh ginger slices to the pitcher. Stir to submerge spices.
  4. Toss the sliced apples and oranges into the pitcher, pressing them down slightly to ensure they are covered by the liquid.
  5. Let the mixture steep at room temperature for at least 30 minutes, or refrigerate for up to 2 hours to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Taste the sangria. If too tart, add brown sugar or honey and stir until dissolved. If too sweet, add a splash of lemon juice or more wine.
  7. Serve over ice if desired, ladling the sangria and fruit into glasses. Top with a splash of sparkling water for fizz.
  8. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick or apple slice before serving.

Notes

Use whole spices rather than ground to avoid a cloudy drink. Do not boil the sangria if reheating, as this will cook off the alcohol. The flavors improve after steeping for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Can be made non-alcoholic by substituting wine with extra cider and grape juice.
