Cozy Slow Cooker Halloween Hot Chocolate Bar

A rich, velvety hot chocolate made in a slow cooker with cocoa, spices, and cream, designed for a stress-free Halloween morning with customizable festive toppings.

Ingredients

  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed or Special Dark)
  • Whole milk (or dairy-free alternative like oat milk)
  • Heavy cream (optional, for richness)
  • Granulated white sugar or brown sugar (1/2 to 3/4 cup)
  • Vanilla extract (1 teaspoon)
  • Sea salt (pinch)
  • Pumpkin pie spice (or blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves)
  • Toppings: Mini marshmallows, crushed candy corn, orange/black sprinkles, crumbled cookies

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and salt to combine dry ingredients evenly.
  2. Pour in the whole milk and heavy cream, then add the vanilla extract. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and free of clumps.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a 4-quart slow cooker insert, scraping down the sides to ensure all ingredients are included.
  4. Cover and cook on the ‘Low’ setting for 4 to 6 hours. Do not cook on High to prevent scorching.
  5. About 15 minutes before serving, stir the hot chocolate well. If it is too thick, add a splash of milk to thin it out.
  6. Ladle into large mugs and serve immediately with desired Halloween toppings.

Notes

For best texture, whisk cocoa with a little cold milk to make a paste before adding the rest of the liquid. If using instant coffee for depth, dissolve it in hot water first. The drink can stay on ‘Warm’ for several hours without burning. Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 3 days or can be frozen for up to 2 months.
