A budget-friendly, easy grilled burger recipe perfect for family BBQs, delivering juicy, flavorful patties with simple ingredients and minimal fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for grilling)
  • 4 standard size burger buns (potato buns recommended)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Leaf lettuce
  • Sliced tomato
  • Pickles
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F / 204°C), which usually takes 10-15 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently by hand without overworking the meat.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a round patty about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick. Make a shallow indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing up during grilling.
  4. Oil the grill grates using a brush or paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
  5. Place the patties on the hot grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes on the first side until grill marks appear and you hear a sizzle.
  6. Flip the burgers carefully with a spatula and grill for another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness. Adjust cooking time if you prefer rarer or well-done burgers.
  7. If using cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of grilling and close the lid to melt it.
  8. Toast the buns cut-side down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
  9. Assemble the burgers by layering the patties on the toasted buns, then adding lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, and your favorite condiments.
  10. Serve immediately hot off the grill.

Notes

Do not overwork the meat when mixing to keep patties tender. Make a thumb indentation in patties to prevent puffing. Oil grill grates well to prevent sticking. Rest patties for a couple of minutes after grilling to redistribute juices. Use a meat thermometer to ensure internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). For gluten-free option, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps. Leaner meats like turkey or chicken can be used with adjusted cooking times.
