cozy christmas simmer pot - featured image

A simple, natural home fragrance recipe using fresh citrus and spices to create a warm, nostalgic holiday atmosphere without artificial chemicals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2–3 large oranges (Navel recommended), sliced into rounds
  • 1 medium lemon, sliced into rounds
  • 3–4 cinnamon sticks (Ceylon preferred)
  • 6–8 whole cloves
  • 1–2 star anise pods (optional)
  • 1 vanilla bean (split and scraped) or 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8–10 cups water (filtered preferred)
  • Optional: Pine needles, rosemary sprigs, or cranberries

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges and lemon thoroughly under warm water to remove wax or dirt.
  2. Slice the ends off the oranges and lemon, then cut into 1/2-inch thick rounds.
  3. If using a vanilla bean, slice it lengthwise and scrape out the seeds; add seeds and pod to the pot.
  4. Place citrus slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise into a large stockpot.
  5. Pour in 8-10 cups of water, ensuring all fruit is fully submerged.
  6. Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.
  7. Once boiling, reduce heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer.
  8. Cover the pot with a lid, leaving it slightly ajar to allow steam to escape.
  9. Simmer for 2-4 hours, checking water level every 30-45 minutes and topping off with hot water as needed.
  10. Dispose of fruit and spices when finished; store cooled spice water in the fridge for up to 3 days to reuse.

Notes

Never leave a simmer pot unattended on the stovetop as water can boil dry. Always top off with hot water to prevent shocking the pot. For a stronger scent, add vanilla extract or food-safe essential oils near the end of the simmer. This recipe is naturally gluten-free and vegan.
